Alaska

There is a school of thought that this 49th state of the Union is a land, a region, a continent unto itself. 3000 salmon-rich rivers cut through the landscape, and Lake Iliamna is as large as Connecticut! Never mind Iceland, did you know that Fairbanks has on average 243 nights of the magnificent Northern Lights per year? Alaska has 17 of USA’s 20 highest peaks, including Mt. Denali, the country’s highest. Do a Flightsee Tour over this magical landscape of bountiful glaciers, or come face-to-face with a wild beast on a meticulously conducted Bear Tour. Watch ice calve off glacial cliff-faces or a whale leap the water surface; marvel at the stunning Alpenglow of the midnight sun or inhale a lungful of fresh sun-baked Tundra earth for that unique smell of this paradise.

Peak Season Description:
Mid-June onward is when things start to get busy, all the way to mid-August, with long, glorious days of sparkling sunshine and short, brief nights. Wildlife comes out of its hiding-holes; it is the perfect time for Flightseeing the landscape, going on Bear Tours or sailing its gorgeous coastline and watching whales jumping in joy.
Shoulder Season Description:
The Spring months of April and May are when sleepy animals emerge from hibernation and hungry for meals after the winter deprivation. Weather is a bit unpredictable, but expect plenty of warm sun-kissed days, with that delicious smell of fresh Tundra earth. Prices are much lower, and attractions are much easier to book. September sees sudden dips in temperature, and days shortening abruptly, but the colors make it worthwhile.
Low Season Description:
At this latitude, everything pretty much freezes over. The all-nighters can get pretty bleak and everything will shut shop until spring, including the wildlife. This is however, the perfect time for the dance of the Northern Lights; head up to Fairbanks for the best viewings.
