Costa Rica

This country is slightly smaller than Lake Michigan, taking up only 0.03% of the planet’s surface, and yet contains a whopping 5% of its biodiversity. Apart from 800 miles of gorgeous coastline, more than 25% of its interior is comprised of national parks and protected areas, boasting 10% of the world’s butterfly species and 52 species of Hummingbirds. Of its 121 volcanoes, the mighty Arenal and the majestic 2-crater Poas are a must-see. Cloud forests, rain forests, natural beauty, wildlife and pristine surfer-beaches, that is Costa Rica in a nutshell. They also aim to be carbon-neutral by 2021, and love to beat the tropical heat with inventive ice-cream flavours like goat cheese.

Peak Season Description:
This is Costa Rica's famed 'dry season', when beaches, cities, rainforests and all the great outdoors of the country come alive; it is a time of packed hotels and busy operators. Booking well in advance is imperative if you wish to be part of the fiesta. Christmas, New Year and Easter are when things go into overdrive. Surfers rejoice too, as the wave conditions are ideal.
Shoulder Season Description:
Shoulder months, just after peak season and before torrential downpours, when unexpected thunderstorms and showers will come and go quickly. Still a time of tourists and crowds, but less so; roads may get a little muddy and the rainforests start to perk up at the welcome rains. Great time for whale-watching; for those seeking beach-time, the northern Pacific coast is still dry and perfect (a great time for surfers too).
Low Season Description:
Torrential rainfall makes Costa Rica a very wet and not-so-enjoyable destination. All activities will cease, and although the rainforests come alive, most trails are just mud and all roads out of the main cities are virtually impassable. Rock bottom accommodation prices, certainly, but nothing to really see, so best to avoid these months.
