Nicaragua

Nicaragua is the largest of all its neighbors and perhaps the most beautiful: huge mountains and fertile valleys ringing its western rim, and the largest freshwater lake in all of Central America. Ancient Granada is its most beautiful city, founded by Hernandez de Cordoba (after whom the currency is also named). Visit the Ruins of Leon Viejo, where life unfolds almost as seamlessly as it did 1500 years ago. This country’s strong identification with its pre-colonial past is in the name: a combination of ‘Nicaro’, the chief of an Indian tribe, and ‘agua’, pertaining to a lake-shore that was his home. Check out the ‘Dual Volcano’, a twin-peaked giant, one of its kind in the whole world that can spew two different magma flows at the same time.

Peak Season Description:
Dry sunny days and mild temperatures. Perfect for any activity across the country, whether exploring the bustling colonial cities, lying on the beach or trekking up volcanoes and through nature reserves. Things peak at Christmas, New Year and Easter, so book well in advance.
Shoulder Season Description:
Chances of showers that will be short and swift without causing inconvenience. Lesser crowds and better value on hotel tariffs. A perfect time for wildlife, particularly bird-watching and snorkeling.
Low Season Description:
The wet season, where adventure activities may shut down. September and October are the worst where rural roads will become virtually impassable.
