Sri Lanka

The word ‘serendipity’ comes from the fortuitous discovery of this little jewel that seems to hang off the ledge of India’s southeast coast, and it is everything that the word suggests: a wonderful, pleasant surprise every time you visit it. That’s what the earliest Arabs thought: an emerald glow on the horizon, which turned into a gorgeous string of sparkling beaches that surround a thick mass of the most verdant forests teeming with life. And cascading waterfalls, sinuous rivers, early Buddhist temples, and the air redolent with the fragrance of cinnamon and cardamom. Since then, quaint villages and mighty colonial cities have sprouted, art, literature, culture and handicrafts have flourished, tea estates have unfurled out off the mists, and wildlife and nature parks thrive. But at the core of it all, it still remains that untarnished jewel that prompted its early visitors to call it Serendib, a classic that will please you down the ages.

Peak Season Description:
While the north and east coast go through their monsoon season, the south and west is dry and perfect for travel, with cool temperatures and blue skies. Ditto with the green and hilly interior, for treks and bike rides through the tea estates and safaris in wildlife parks. Christmas and New Year holidays are super-busy so book in advance.
Shoulder Season Description:
April still has dry weather, but temperatures may rise in anticipation of the SW Monsoon, which hits Sri Lanka around mid-May onwards. August – November is when tourism picks up again after a wet and wild spell of the SW monsoon.
Low Season Description:
The monsoon is here, pretty much hammering the south and west coast, leaving the north and east dry and perfect for travel. The hilly interior is rainy but good for nature treks if you don't mind getting wet. Waterfalls are in full flow and the greenery is stunning.
