  • Itinerary Summary

    Day 1 : Delhi - Amritsar

    We either fly to Amritsar airport or take the Shatabadi express train from Delhi to Amritsar. On arrival at Amritsar airport/railway station our travel rep/driver meets us and transfers us to the hotel. In the afternoon we will witness the extraordinary joint retreat ceremony of the Indian and Pakistani guard at the Indo-Pakistan border at Wagha.  In the evening we will visit the historical Golden Temple.

    Day 2 : Amritsar - Chamba 6/7 Hours drive

    After breakfast we will go take a quick look at the temple again. Later we will drive to Chamba.  We will check into the Orchard Hut Chamba. We have to walk for half an hour from the road to reach our guest house.

    Day 3 : Chamba - Chatrari - Bharmaur - Bharmani 4/5 hours drive

    We spend the whole day on the road visiting remote villages and temples. The drive to Chatrari is over a narrow mountain road with a cliff on one side and a gorge on the other. Chatrari is a Gaddi tribal village hidden up in the mountains. The ancient Shakti Devi temple in Chatrari village is worth visiting. We will continue our drive to Bharamaur where we will visit the ancient Chaurasi temples. Later we will drive to Bharmani temple which is up above Bharmaur village, where we will camp in the open fields.

    Day 4 : Bharmani - Kugti Village - Galotu 1 hour drive and 3 hours walk

    Today we will enter Kugti Wildlife Sanctuary. It is an hour’s drive to Dharol, the end of the road from where we walk to Kugti village. After visiting the village we will continue our walk to the camping site at Galotu, from where we can enjoy a beautiful view of high Himalayan peaks.
     

    We stay overnight in tents.

    Day 5 : Galotu

    Today we will spend a leisurely day enjoying the view. We could even walk up to the nearby mountain peak.

    Day 6 : Galotu - Kugti - Dharol - Zhumar 3 hours walk and 4 hours drive

    We will walk back to the road to continue our drive to the next destination. Zhumar is a small village up in the Chamba valley. En route, we will visit the Chamund Devi temple from where we can enjoy splendid views of Chamba town and the Ravi river below.
     

    We spend the night in tents.

    Day 7 : Zhumar - Towards Sach Pass - Devikothi 6/7 hours drive

    Today we will drive into Churah valley, one of the least explored valleys in Himachal. Sach Pass is accessible only for a few months a year (July to Sep) but before and after these months we can drive to the base at Satrundi. The area above Devikothi and below Sach pass is called the valley of flowers. During July-Aug-Sep we will be captivated by the many species of alpine flowers in full bloom.
     

    We stay overnight near Devikothi, a small village in Churah valley.

    Day 8 : Devikothi - Khajiar - Chamba Jot 4 hours drive and 3 hours walk

    After breakfast we will drive down to the valley and continue our uphill drive to Khajiar, a beautiful alpine meadow surrounded by tall deodar trees. We will spend some time walking in the meadows. After a short drive from Khajiar we will reach the starting point of a beautiful walk. It is 3 hours of easy walking on top of Dhauladhar mountain with a superb parallel view of the high Himalayan peaks of the Pir Panjal range of the Central Himalayas.
     

    We camp on top of Dhauladhar overnight.

    Day 9 : Chamba Jot - Kainthly 3 hours walk

    We will continue our walk on top of Dhauladhar for some time and then descend through a dense forest to Kainthly, another remote and unexplored valley in Himachal.

    Day 10 : Kainthly - Chowari - Dharamsala 2 hours walk and 3 hours drive

    We will walk down to the nearest road to Chowari village, and continue our drive to Dharamsala, where we will check into a hotel. In the afternoon we will visit the Dalai Lama Temple and the Tibetan market in Mcleod Ganj.

    Today we will be transferred to the airport in Dharamsala for our flight to Delhi.

Day 1 : Delhi - Amritsar

  • Min Temperature will vary from  0 to 5 Degree Celcious.
  • Light rain for a short duration can come.

 

May and June

  • Max Temperature will Vary from 25 to 32 Degree Celcious.
  • Min Temperature will Vary from 5 to 8 Degree Celcious.
  • Short rain with thunderstorm is usually expected on one of the days during the trek.

 

Sep to November

  •  Max Temperature varies from 20 to 25 Degree Celcious.
  • Min Temperature varies from -2 to 5 Degree celcious
  • There are less chances of rain. In September we usually get short rain with sleet and by the end of the season there are chances of fresh snowfall on the mountain tops.

Visas, Travel Documents and Special Permits

A valid passport, onward and return ticket. Your passport should be valid at least six months after your return date. India requires a visa for U.S. citizens.

 

Please note that we recommend you have two blank pages per country in your passport to make sure there is room for the proper immigration stamps upon entry into India. Therefore you will require a total of two blank pages. (Two blank pages are defined as a front and a back of one page). While this is not an official requirement for India, immigration rules can change unexpectedly in Asia and there is a possibility that you will be denied boarding on to your flight and/or entry into the country if you do not have enough empty pages in your passport.

We request you to dress modestly while on a village or temple visit. Minimum of half sleeves shirts/T-shirts and full trousers. Head should be covered while visiting a Sikh Temple, Mosques,etc. No strappy/Skimpy dresses at these places. Shoes/sandals and any other kind of footwear are not allowed. You have to visit bare footed.

Meals provided

Simple Indian vegetarian meals. Breakfast consists of eggs, porridge, bread, butter, jam, fresh fruit and juice on some of the days. Lunch is usually a packed lunch - veg. biryani, sandwich, small packed juice, chapati with jam or butter. Dinner is cooked fresh - simple veg. meal - 2-3 kinds of veggies, dal, rice, chapati, soup. On a few days, there may be chinese or continental food as well.

Other useful tips

Eating & Drinking:

  • Do not Launch straight into hot curry.
  • Never eat food on the streets.
  • To begin with avoid eating Salads and raw vegetables.
  • Always peel your fruit.
  • Drink only bottled water or boiled water during the tour/trek and ensure that the seal in intact before opening.
  • Avoid ice in your drinks. Also avoid Ice creams at smaller places.
  • Our trekking cook can prepare some western food on request.
