Climate

Kenya lies on the equator and experiences a pleasant tropical climate, but there are large temperature fluctuations depending on your location. Kenya’s daytime temperatures average between 20°C and 28°C, but it is warmer on the coast. The coastal heat is moderated by the monsoon winds, which tempers the heat. Kenya is too close to the equator to experience a real winter and summer; instead it experiences a dry and a wet season.

The dry season lasts from June to October. These months are the coldest of the year, and depending on altitude, daytime temperatures can be anywhere from 23°C at higher altitudes, like the Masai Mara, to 28°C at lower altitudes, like the coastal areas. During this time of year the sky is clear and days are sunny. There is very little rain in most of the country so these are the least humid months.

The wet season begins in November and ends in June. During these months daytime temperatures are between 24°C and 27°C at higher altitudes. At lower altitudes daytime temperatures are more consistent at 30°C. From December to April the humidity is intense in coastal areas.

No matter the season, it is advisable to carry warm clothing for morning game drives in open vehicles as early morning temperatures at higher altitudes are typically 10°C.

Kenya has a wide variety of ecosystems that coexist in quiet harmony- snowy mountain ranges, flat savannah plains and deserts, lowland equatorial forests, coasts with mangrove swamps and sandy beaches protected by coral reefs.

With this sort of diversity it is hardly a wonder that Kenya is home to over a hundred species of mammals, 12 different types of primate, a range of reptiles and more than 1,000 species of birds, including over 75 birds of prey. Tourists often spot giraffes, zebras and antelope, mixed in with the occasional pride of lions.

Visas, Travel Documents and Special Permits

Please note that you are responsible for checking your destination country's visa requirements and then getting the visa accordingly.

Further, most countries require travelers to have a passport that is valid from at least 6 months from the day of entry into the country, so please confirm that you satisfy your destination country or countries passport, visa and medical (if any) requirements well in advance of your trip.

Immunizations / Medical Requirements

It is compulsory for everyone entering the country to be vaccinated against Yellow Fever.

It is also recommended that they be vaccinated against Tetanus, Hepatitis A, Typhoid and Poliomyelitis, although these are not mandatory.

Contracting malaria is a very real risk in Kenya. Travelers are advised to be aware of this and take precautionary measures.

Recommended Packing List
  • Passengers should bring only soft sided bags on safaris as our vehicles have limited luggage space
