Day 02 : Managua to Granada (approx. 1 hour)

Founded by the Spanish in 1523, Granada has a number of antiquated ornate churches and old Spanish-style buildings that date back to the colonial period. It is sometimes called 'The Great Sultana', in recognition of its beautiful colonial architectural heritage. Even though it was badly damaged during the mid-1850s, whilst being captured by the American William Walker, it is still a popular city and is one of the country's main destinations for international travelers.

Situated less than 30 km from the country's international airport, Granada is an excellent starting point to visit some of the Nicaragua's main attractions. These attractions include viewing some of the active volcanoes in the area, enjoying a visit to a cloud forest ecosystem – unique to the area – or enjoying some of the many beaches lapped by the Pacific Ocean. You can also take in the natural beauty of Lake Cocibolca or spend time amongst nature enjoying natural wonders such as the annual sea turtle egg-laying. Granada is at the center of it all!

When you're not out and about enjoying the wonders of nature, you can spend time discovering the city. Like most colonial cities in this part of the world, the whole metropolis is built around a main square known as Parque Central. This is really Granada's social, cultural and economic hub. It is in and around Parque Central that you will find Granada's cathedral, city hall, cultural centers, banks and hundreds of small shops and stalls which are dedicated to the sale of traditional food and hand crafted goods – the perfect place to get some mementoes of your trip. To the west of the main square, you will find the central market – great for fresh fruit, vegetables, fish, cheese and meat.

You may also make your way down 'La Calzada' Avenue, which is flanked by large colonial houses known as "casonas" and interesting churches. It ends on the lakeshore of Nicaragua Lake where you will find a beautiful boulevard for pleasant evening strolls. You will also find the 'Centro Turistico' here, where you can enjoy restaurants, beaches and discos. Most of the attractions can be reached on foot and are most enjoyable.

You can also visit the Masaya Volcano, which is actually a volcanic complex composed of a nested set of calderas and craters. The massive outer Nindiri cone host the pit craters of Masaya, Santiago, Nindiri and San Pedro, and is considered as one of the most active volcanoes in Central America. You will see the smoking crater and if lucky, the extremely rare Green Parakeets (Chocoyo), which, strangely, call the volcano their home. The Masaya Volcano is the only volcano in the western hemisphere where you are able to drive to the rim.

After visiting the volcanic complex, you will visit the famous Masaya Market, the very heart of Nicaraguan handicrafts. Aside from unique Nicaraguan products such as hand woven hammocks, embroidered blouses, wood carvings, leather goods, ceramics, paintings and hemp weaving the market is very diverse. You will actually find the best of what Nicaragua´s talented craftspeople have to offer. The Mercado de Artesanias (Craft Market) is located inside what used to be the ‘Mercado Viejo (old market), build in 1891, destroyed by fire twice and is now a safe and comfortable place to do your shopping. Even if you do not buy anything, the Masaya market is an enjoyable and colorful experience.

The elegant and luxurious Hotel Plaza Colón is a beautifully refurbished colonial house overlooking Plaza Colón (Central Park). It combines modern amenities with the old, colonial architecture of the restored building.

Hotel Plaza Colón is an eye catcher in the center of Granada. Right outside the hotel, guests can observe the daily life in Plaza Colón or hop on a horse-drawn carriage and take a city tour. At the evergreen patio located in one of the hotel's beautiful internal courtyards, guests can enjoy a nice refreshing swim. All rooms have air-conditioning, cable TV, fans, and an internet connection and minibar. Some of the rooms have a large terrace which offers great views of the park and the colorful cathedral.

    Accommodation: Hotel Plaza Colon

    Meals: Breakfast

Day 03 : Mombacho Volcano & Laguna de Apoyo

Experience impressive cloud forests, diverse craters, and spectacular views from the top of Mombacho Volcano on this moderate hike.

Situated in a beautiful cloud forest and home to a wide variety of vegetation and wildlife, a visit to Mombacho Volcano is a great way for any nature lover to spend the day. Drive to the top (1150 meters) of the volcano in a 4x4 vehicle.

After a quick trip to the scientific station, explore this impressive volcano on a guided walk. The well-kept Crater Trail (1.5 km) leads you around the crater through dense cloud forest. Pass by several fumaroles and enjoy spectacular views overlooking Granada, Las Isletas, Laguna de Apoyo and the Masaya Volcano. Be sure to keep an eye out for the howler and white face monkeys as well as the endemic Mombacho salamander.

    Day 07 - 11 : Jicaro Island Ecolodge - Granada - Morgan´s Rock Hacienda Eco-Lodge (approx. 2 hours)

Few lodges can offer harmony with nature the way Morgan’s Rock does. Residing in one of the 15 sustainably constructed beachfront bungalows (nearly all of which boast a gorgeous view of the hacienda’s private beach), guests will find it impossible not to relax. Drop your bags in your spacious bedroom upon arrival and you would have entered another world, intuitively switching gears to a slower, more natural tempo.

Just outside you’ll spot howler monkeys, languorous sloths hanging from the trees, and a variety of vibrant tropical birds. Each bungalow includes a comfortable terrace where guests may enjoy a morning coffee, a glass of wine while they enjoy the sunset, or a well-deserved nap while soaking in stunning vistas and unparalleled wildlife.

The bungalows were designed to make guests feel at one with nature while creating minimal impact on the surrounding environment. Each three-sided bungalow is perched on a cliff 30-100 feet over the private beach and cove, just across a 50 yard jungle suspension bridge. Set into the treetops, each bungalow accommodates up to five people. Outside on the balcony is a special feature - a queen size day bed suspended by thick marine rope, reminding guests of the casual luxury they’ve come to experience and setting an appropriately relaxed pace for duration of their stay at the hacienda.

Adding an authentic touch to the rooms is the artwork of Nicaraguan artist Augusto Silva which features designs inspired by indigenous civilizations of Nicaragua, specifically the Tunu.

These luxury accommodations were constructed and furnished by renowned sustainable wood and furniture companies of Nicaragua. Only certified sustainable wood are used in these simple, yet elegant designs. The company consciously utilizes pieces of lumber that would otherwise be wasted, such as wood with slight imperfections, giving their original items character and charm.

Soothing hardwood design provides a natural tone that instills a sense of stillness, simplicity, and calm. The beachside yoga pagoda is not far away, as are enticing lounge chairs and tropical straw huts awaiting you shore-side should you decide to leave your beautiful accommodations and explore. You’ll be happy to know you can return at the end of a long, enjoyable day to a hot shower (solar powered and always reliable), a pleasant ambience, and the soothing rhythm of waves rolling in to shore, sure to lure you into sweet dreams.
